Retail Jobs rise as the Festive Season Approaches

After a slow period for the retail sector over recent months, a report released by the British Retail Consortium has predicted a large increase in the number of seasonal jobs throughout the retail sector over the coming weeks in the run up to Christmas.

Created in conjunction with the experts at the Bond Dickinson Retail Employment Monitor, the British Retail Consortium has predicted that seasonal jobs will be up on like for like roles compared with last year, as retailers ready themselves for Black Friday and the busy Christmas Sales.

“Growth is spread across the whole of the industry, with both food and non-food retailers reporting rises,” said BRC Chief Executive Helen Dickinson.

However, whilst there continues to be a short term increase, the detailed report also states that recent changes to government legislation, particularly in relation to the upcoming National Living Wage increase, will impact future employment statistics.

“The news that government policies could add £14bn to the retail wages, training and rates bill over the next five years casts a shadow over the possibility of future strong jobs growth,” Dickinson added. “We will be watching the figures very closely to see how the impact of this additional burden affects employment prospects.”

Whilst the future looks unclear, one thing that is apparent is that there it is going to be an extremely time for the retail sector and all those involved in it. At REC Solutions we have a wide selection of roles available to candidates, so if you’re looking to find the perfect position over the festive season then please don’t hesitate to take a look at the Retail Jobs section of our website.
